The Gary Player Country Club golf course is part of the huge Sun City entertainment complex and borders the - also by Gary Player designed - Lost City golf course and the Pilanesberg National Park. The course lies amidst beautiful nature and is regarded as one of the best in the world. Stretching over more than 7000 metres, it definitely is one of the world's longest golf courses. Here, every year in December, during the hot season, the "Million Dollar Challenge", sponsored by South Africa´s Nedbank, is played.

All 18 holes are to be classified as difficult. There are plenty bunkers and water hazards in the shape of rivers and dams. The most spectacular hole is the ninth with its island green (par five)..

Because the golf course borders in the east directly on the Kruger National Park, one can not only play golf here, but also observe a lot of game, e.g. various antelopes, giraffe, elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile.Even lions have been sighted on the course. The game arrives usually early in the morning and late in the afternoon to drink at the waterholes. Golfers should only move around the course in a caddy to avoid unpleasant encounters.
The Hans Merensky Golf Club is a favourite destination of many South Africa golf tours, for the course provides an authentically African experience. Each year a tournament of the South African Vodacom Tour is being played here.
 

The 8th hole (par 3, 155 metres long) is particularly attractive. The green is guarded by a water obstacle, where crocodiles live.

Leopard Creek Golf Club

Designed by Gary Player and working closely with the Kruger National Park and nature conservation authorities, the golf course was specifically designed to blend in with the surroundings, providing sophisticated leisure amenities in an undisturbed natural environment. A paradise for bird-watchers, a challenge for golfers and an opportunity for all the beauty of the bushveld. The cool shade of indigenous trees, some hundreds of years old, are home to over 200 bird species.

Abundant wildlife including the big five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – can be viewed from open landrovers or on guided walking trails, accompanied by qualified game rangers.

Innovative architectural and landscaping techniques ensure that the golf course and living areas are naturally protected from animals, while lakes and small streams have been diverted through the development to create scenic vistas and interesting golf strategies. Golfing hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek, for much of the water is home to families of hippos and the magnificent creatures for which the river is named – crocodiles. Adjacent to the Crocodile River and the Kruger National Park.

The Lost City Golf Course lies within the Sun City entertainment complex in the semi-desert of the North-West Province of South Africa. It was designed - like the neighbouring Gary Player Country Club - by South Africa's grand master of golf Gary Player. The Lost City Golf Course is long, difficult and beautiful and belongs to the best in the world.

The course shows many water hazards, a lake among them. The most dangerous water hazard lies at hole 13 (directly at the green), because here a great number of crocodiles is romping about, some more than two metres long. It is not advisable to fish golf balls out of the water, why it usually contains dozens of them.
 

The signature hole may just be the 13th with "snappers" like that in residence!

With a par of 71 and measuring 6 063 metres it is not long or overly difficult to play, but Nelspruit golf course has an unusual start to the front nine in that the first is a par 4, the second a par 5, the third a par 3, the fourth a par 5 and the fifth a par 3, before closing off with four straight par 4s. The seven-minute gap between tee times had to be extended to eight minutes to overcome backlogs during peak times because of this.
The dogleg-right first hole is as tough an opening hole. With houses to the left and right an accurate tee shot is needed to find the fairway. You then face a daunting medium- to long-iron shot into a green surrounded by trees and bunkers to the right.
The back nine, save for the two par 3's on 13 and 17, is either played uphill or downhill, with the signature hole being the 498-metre 14th, the only par 5 on the back nine. From an elevated tee, a generous tree-lined fairway runs away gradually to a green surrounded by bunkers. There is the option of going for the green in two, but for high handicappers the safe bet is to lay up.

Straddling the 6th and 18th fairways at Nelspruit Golf Club is the biggest fig tree you are ever likely to see. If your ball lands anywhere near it, there is little chance of going for either green in two. Just imagine trying to play over, around or through a five-storey building spanning some 40 metres at its widest point.

High mounds, carefully crafted water features and strategically placed bunkers have been set amid the scenic mountain surrounds and vast expanse of water to add to the overall experience.

Design excellence and high quality maintenance combine to present Pecanwood Golf Course as a challenge to discerning golfers on most levels, testing their intelligence rather than their strength. Top amateurs and pros are put through their paces when playing off the 7000m “gold” tees.

 The signature hole must be hole 13, a par 3 running along side a lake. The small green is guarded on both sides by huge bunkers.

Founded in 1863, the Pietersburg Golf Club was virtually a desert. However, as the years progressed, so did the course, and it is now rated one of the best with 700 members and bent grass greens.

The club house boasts an excellent halfway house, changing rooms, braai area and function hall. The bar creates its own atmosphere, where once inside you just don't want to go home. The club is very proud to have Retief Goosen, 2001 U.S. Open Champion as a previous club professional. Other notables include Callie Swart and veteran Ray Earle who have both achieved Springbok colours.

Nestling alongside the foothills of the Magaliesberg and situated among some of the largest and richest Platinum mines in the world, is Rustenburg golf club. The ever growing Rustenburg community knows that this club offers a layout and camaraderie few clubs can equal. The course has Royal Blue cynodon grass on the greens which make the putting a little different than other bent grass courses. Recently completed dams on numbers 1 and 6 have made the course a little tougher but still fair. The great condition is evidence of a great greenkeeper and his dedicated staff. The club currently ranks as number 76 in the country, making steady progress the last 3 years.

The course begins as follows, on a par 4 first hole, a slight uphill dogleg left with water right and left off the tee...

Skukuza Golf Club - Kruger Park

Skukuza Golf Course was built in 1972, the course is a Par 72, and is 5950m (6450 yards) for men and 5059m (5480 yards) for women. as a recreational facility for the Skukuza personnel, and is now available to visitors to the Kruger National Park for the first time.
The Skukuza Golf Course is a magnificent 9-hole (18-tee) course situated in the world-renowned Kruger National Park on the outskirts of Skukuza restcamp. The rich wildlife sanctuary surrounding the golf course is home to the Big Five, a huge variety of birds and countless animals, which all conspire to provide the visitor with a harmonious close-to-nature golfing experience.
Since the course is not fenced-in, uninvited spectators are a common sight, hippo, impala, warthog and baboons to mention but a few. The course offers the pleasure of challenge and adventure. For example #2, Par 3, have water on the left and to the back of the green. The signature hole #9, Par 3 of about 150m is played across Lake Panic. The Skukuza Golf Course has no bunkers, although 'aerial bunkers' abound because of the many trees found on the course.

Tzaneen Golf Club

This is one of the most scenic courses in South Africa, its undulating and tree-lined layout providing splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Situated in a tropical Lowveld rural setting, there is an amazing variety of indigenous and exotic trees on the property.
 

The signature hole is hard to define as there are lots of exciting holes to be played at Tzaneen, none more so than the two par 3s on the front nine, the second and sixth, where you play from elevated tees to tricky targets.
